The American Cancer Society funds the full research career, but two tracks bracket where a population-science trainee engages: an undergraduate internship near the start, and a postdoctoral fellowship years later. ACS extramural funding is run by its Extramural Discovery Science team (ACS research grants).
DICR Internship — for undergraduates
The Diversity in Cancer Research (DICR) Internship targets underrepresented-minority undergraduates to build the cancer-research workforce (ACS DICR).
- Stipend: $500/week for 10 weeks = $5,000 for the summer.
- Format: hands-on mentored research — laboratory, computational/database, or clinical.
- Scale: grew from 8 institutions / 32 interns (2021) to 32 institutions supporting up to 224 interns (2024).
- How to apply: each ACS-funded host institution sets its own criteria and selection, choosing roughly 4–8 interns. You apply to a participating institution, not to ACS centrally. Verify the host's deadline (commonly late winter/early spring for summer placement).
