HCI is where the national funding ladder becomes local and accessible for a Mountain West trainee. It is an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center — the only one in the Mountain West, serving Utah, Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, and Montana (HCI / NCI; HCI on Comprehensive designation).
Why "Comprehensive" matters
The Comprehensive designation reflects depth across basic, translational, clinical, and prevention/cancer-control/population-based research (HCI research). HCI runs 650+ research projects and 300+ research teams, including the largest Phase 1 trials program in the Mountain West. For population-science trainees, the prevention and cancer-control programs are the relevant home.
Training infrastructure an undergraduate can use
- PathMaker Programs for Cancer Research — laboratory-based opportunities for high-school and undergraduate students (and teachers), often from rural and frontier Mountain West areas (HCI research; PathMaker Scholars). The PathMaker Scholars summer program is 10 weeks residential, up to $4,000, funded by an NCI R25.
